I want to apologize for my posts about the Farrakhan book. I was wrong. I have connected with educators and community members and have since learned about the issues. I fully rescind that post. It has no place in our schools.
I also apologize for my likes on social media of graphic content. It was inappropriate. I will never do that again.
I have spent my life fighting against antisemitism, anti-arab hate, Islamophobia, and all forms of oppression. I have spent my life fighting for the equality of all people. There is a very long history of Jewish and Black people backing each other and working in solidarity for justice. I want to continue that important work.

I am excited to be running for LAUSD School Board in Board District 1. I was born and raised in South LA and attended LAUSD Schools. I have been a parent in BD1 for 20 years. My kids have attended our community’s schools, including Crenshaw and Dorsey. I have been on the front lines fighting to STOP the privatization, reconstitutions, and co-locations in BD1, while fighting FOR Community Schools and the creation of the Black Student Achievement Plan. I am a proud union member of SEIU 721 and have always stood alongside educators and unions.
I want to tell you why I’m so passionate about:
I’m passionate about transforming LAUSD and BD1 because of my life experiences:
After growing up in South Los Angeles, I served my country for 11 years as an Army Medic. Coming home, it was tough to find stable work and housing. So, I went back to school. 20 years ago, on Juneteenth—a day when Black people celebrate our freedom—police beat me up in my neighborhood. Even though I was the one who was brutalized by police, I was wrongly arrested and convicted for crimes I did not commit. After I appealed my case, a judge expunged my record and vacated my convictions.
I was already involved in the movement for educational and racial justice, but this and other experiences as a Black man born and raised in South LA led me to dedicate my life to fighting for justice in my community, with a focus on schools and young people. I got involved in the fight to stop Black schools from being reconstituted and shut down. I was elected President of my Neighborhood Council, appointed to the LAUSD African American Education Task Force and to LAUSD’s Parent Advisory Committee. I helped spearhead the Community School effort and the creation of the Black Student Achievement Plan. Now my kids will be able to take advantage of targeted support to help Black youth flourish. I joined UTLA and SEIU Local 99 in their historic strikes for increased resources, mental health supports, class size and to fight the school to prison pipeline. I haven’t stopped fighting for Black and Brown kids in BD1 ever since.
As a parent, an advocate, and a leader in our schools and community for 20 years—as someone who has experienced the limitations and the possibilities of LAUSD–I am ready to serve as your School Board member so we can transform this district!
Join me as we dare to imagine schools that truly empower our youth and communities.
Peace,
Kahllid Al-Alim
